Autism Care

Children with autism benefit from the integrative medical approach in our Autism Care program. Autism is a developmental disability that causes communication, social and behavioral issues that range from mild to severe. Autism, also known as autism spectrum disorder, is a term that now includes various conditions, including:

  • Autistic disorder, including classical and regressive autism
  • Asperger syndrome
  • PDD-NOS, pervasive developmental disorder, not otherwise specified

Greg Brown, M.D., directs the Autism Care program at our functional medicine clinic near Milwaukee. A board-certified internist, he has been practicing functional medicine since 2008.

Conventional medicine typically treats autism with early interventional behavioral programs that include speech and language therapy and medical management. Our Autism Care program, administered by Dr. Brown, employs biomedical treatment to address underlying medical issues and conditions that may be negatively impacting a child’s development.

Biomedical treatment is a vital component of our Autism Care program

The first step in our Autism Care program is a thorough evaluation that assesses the patient’s medical and family history and lab test results. In addition, Dr. Brown evaluates and tests the child to determine whether he or she is experiencing any of the following conditions:

  1. Allergies
  2. Eczema or other rashes
  3. Sleep issues
  4. Chronic physical symptoms, such as: gastrointestinal problems or chronic pain
  5. Behavioral issues, such as tics, aggressive behavior or self-injuries
  6. Problems with immune dysregulation
  7. Infectious processes that can cause chronic symptoms

As part of the Autism Care program, Dr. Brown looks at under-identified medical issues that affect autism, including thyroid, adrenal and mitochondrial diseases.

We take a functional approach to autism

Our Autism Care program takes a functional approach to treating autism, taking factors into consideration that conventional medicine does not.

Yeast, primarily the candida albicans species, can affect children. Yeast thrives in warm, moist environments of the body such as the lining of the gastrointestinal tract. If left untreated, yeast grows and multiplies, which can cause serious pain to children on the autism spectrum. These children often lack the communications skills to express their pain or symptoms, so they act out aggressively instead. Our Autism Care program addresses this issue.

Unlike conventional medicine clinics, at our functional medical clinic near Milwaukee we test children for toxins, including: heavy metals, organic toxins, pica and lead. We offer therapies to treat children who test positive for toxins.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in 68 children, or 1.5%, has been identified as having autism spectrum disorder or ASD.

Our Autism Care program includes dietary changes and supplements

As part of the biomedical intervention in our Autism Care program, we recommend that children follow a very specific diet. We supplement that diet with melatonin, probiotics, magnesium, zinc, essential fatty acids and more.

At our functional medicine clinic near Milwaukee, we treat the whole child, not just their symptoms, when we treat autism.
