Dr. Susan Marra, MS, ND

Dr. Susan Marra is an adult and pediatric Lyme specialist with over 23 years of experience as a clinician, and over 30 years in the health care industry. She has trained with world-leading Lyme disease specialists (Dr. Richard Horowitz and Dr. Charles Ray Jones) on the east coast and has practiced both on the east (Connecticut) and west coasts (Seattle). She has a BS and MS in Psychology, with an emphasis in Psychobiology, and received her ND degree from Bastyr University. Prior to attending Bastyr, she worked at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland, and at the University of Pennsylvania in brain and behavior research. Dr. Marra has been an ILADS member since 2001.

She has extensive experience in treating tick-borne illness in both children and adults, and uses an integrated medicine approach to help her patients heal. She was the first Naturopathic doctor to receive an ILADS preceptorship from the Turn the Corner Foundation where she trained with Dr. Horowitz in Hyde Park, NY.

Dr. Susan Marra believes that naturally occurring peptides will eventually replace pharmaceutical medications. Peptides are strings of less than 50 amino acids, and are an emerging therapy in medicine, and may be useful for immune modulation, increasing longevity, decreasing neuroinflammation, and enhancing cognition.  They are generally made by a compounding pharmacy and can be taken orally most often or via sub-Q injections. Peptides are easily administered and can optimize an existing treatment plan for wellness.  Generally, they are very safe and yield few side effects.

The new era of genomics will help identify risk factors in people who have a more difficult time healing from tick-borne illness. She shows compassion to a community of people who have been misdiagnosed and misunderstood for several decades.

Dr. Susan Marra has been successful in overcoming her own battle with Lyme disease when she contracted it in 2001 while living and practicing in Westport Connecticut. Of note, she never found a tick bite and did not have a bullseye rash.

She is also Board Certified and a Fellow in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine through the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine and is a Fellow in Metabolic Medicine through the Metabolic Medical Institute. She is also recently certified in nutritional genomics consulting through the Nutrigenetic Research Institute. Dr. Susan Marra uses a variety of skills to help her patients heal from tick-borne illness, and believes that nutrigenomics is paving the way for a better understanding of the epigenetic environmental factors that contribute to people becoming ill with tick-borne illness. She regularly attends seminars, workshops, and conferences to advance her knowledge and remains at the forefront of this new era of medicine.

In April of 2021, Dr. Susan Marra was asked to be a Medical Advisory Board member for Global Lyme Alliance (1 of 4). The other board members include Dr. Kenneth Liegner, Dr. Leo Galland, and Dr. Steven Bock.  She is thrilled to now have the opportunity to contribute to high-level decision-making regarding future research money appropriation for tick-borne diseases. This opportunity will allow her to express a unique perspective as a Naturopathic physician to an audience that would otherwise be difficult to reach.

In July 2022, Dr. Susan Marra was elected to the board of Dr. Richard Horowitz’s non-profit research organization, MSIDS Research Foundation. She will join 6-10 other prominent physicians and scientists to initiate and develop cutting edge research projects with the hope of finding a cure for vector borne diseases.

Dr. Susan Marra currently uses a combination of naturally occurring peptides, herbs, vitamins, antibiotics, and German biologic medicine to address the complicated symptom picture that Lyme patients usually present. Generally, her patients do quite well and return to a productive life.

This includes the use of a sophisticated integrated systems approach to healing by utilizing an individualized combination of the following:

Hormone Balancing

Botanical Medicine

Therapeutic Nutrition

Diet Therapy

Neuroendocrine Immunology

Personalized Medicine

Amino Acid Therapy

Immune Support

Anticoagulation Therapy

I have had Lyme disease for 30+ years. Living in Seattle I found no help from doctors who didn't think of Lyme as a cause of my extreme symptoms 30 years ago and I didn't either. I had a lot of really dark periods where I didn't know what was happening to me but I really took a turn for the worse in the summer of 2016. I found a Dr. who tested and treated me for Lyme but it wasn't enough and I hit rock bottom the summer of 2017. I had someone recommend Dr. Marra to me - saying she herself has Lyme disease and is leading a productive life. I went to see Dr. Marra in February 2018 - a mess, very little hope, and ready to give up and let Lyme win. Dr. Marra changed my life. She insisted there was hope for me. She explained what was happening to my body with long term Lyme and what steps we would take to get on top of it. She was so confident that I wouldn't always feel like I did when I was sitting in her office crying my eyes out. So, here I am, almost five years later...working 30 hours a week, able to travel, enjoy my family, read, walk and I have a positive outlook on the future. I am not 100% better. 30+ years of Lyme, Babesia and Bartonella have done damage that may never fully heal.
One other thing along this journey is the careful monitoring Dr. Marra insists on. Labwork every 4-6 weeks, depending on when your appointment is. This allows her to see if your body is able to handle the antibiotics and other medicines you may be on. She knows her supplements...which ones work, which ones are useless.
And finally, she cares. she's been there. She understands and she's available for you when a crisis hits or your Lyme flares. I can truly say I haven't felt alone on this journey since February of 2018. Thank you Dr. Marra and her lovely assistant Heather.

I was recently diagnosed with Lyme disease and numrous other co-infections that love to hang out together with this diagnosis. No medical Dr. In the 43 years I have struggled with increasingly more symptoms ever tested for or suggested Lyme disease (or any other treatment that was helpful to symptoms except as perhaps a stopgap). I was referred to Dr. Marra by a Dr. Of Accupuncture after she reresearched Lyme literate doctors on the west coast who use blood tests to diagnose as well as patient specific treatments. She was concerned that my myriad of symptoms looked a lot like Lyme with co-infections. From the time I started treatment 3 1/2 months ago I have felt better than I have in years. I have weaned off most medications from other doctors and have more energy and feel awake more than I have in years with NO caffiene needed :).Dr. Marra has brought me back to life and I am excited for my future and that I will continue to only get better over the long haul of recovery. Dr. Marra is a rare Dr. Who I can put my trust in that she has the capabilities to find the uniqueness of my symptoms and work on them for my healing. This has been a sad, lonely and scary journey for me and I'm so grateful that I'm no longer doing it alone! Thank You Dr. Marra and Heather! If I were to get stuck in healing right now I would feel better than I have in several years. Sigh,.... Lyme and it's several debilitating Cronies may make you faint of heart, nerve , endocrine glands and a myriad of other body tissues and organs but their are Dr.s out there who can help you heal. Dr. MARRA is doing that for me.

Dr. marra has been my doctor for years. She is helping me heal from Lyme, bartonella and babesia ( to name a few). She is attentive, kind, incredibly smart and very knowledgeable about tick borne diseases. She trained with great doctors back east, and has been working nonstop thru her own Lyme disease to help her patients. Sometimes doctors and patients don’t click; maybe that is what happened. I don’t know, but I’m here to say Dr. Marra AND her staff are wonderful.

Hopefully you get to Dr Marra for treatment sooner than I did. She understands all the ins and outs of Lyme, coinfections and the treatments therof. Her knowledge and treatment regimens have taken me from 1/2 dead feeling to 'I spent time this summer at a cottage'. It may take more time than you like but trust her process.
She listens, is on time for appts, and is always respectful. She knows what matters and what does not. Trust her.

I'm grateful to Dr. Marra for treating me and helping me get my life back. I was in treatment for 10 years. When I first came in, I couldn't be out of bed for more than 2-3 hours a day due to extreme fatigue, had migraines half the time or more, regularly experienced heart palpitations, and many, many more symptoms. I was told by other Drs it was stress from being in college but finally went to a naturopath for my original diagnosis. Thankfully, because my symptoms were getting worse by the month.

I went to Dr Marra for treatment and now I have a demanding full-time job, have active hobbies like running, bouldering, and paddleboarding, and have time and energy for an active social life. It all came back slowly over time, with a full-time job 3 years after starting treatment and layering in additional activities as I got better. I've been stable for 2 years now without treatment, with no sign of illness returning. A long road, but 1,000% worth it to have a full life.

If you have Lyme disease and you worry that you'll never be OK again -- I see you, I was you, and I hope you find comfort and hope in knowing that it can get better. All the best wishes to you, no one deserves to deal with this awful illness.

Dr. Marra is literally a life saver! After going undiagnosed and being told over and over again there was nothing wrong, I was almost completely disabled. Dr. Marra brought me back to the land of the living. I had multiple infections and could barely function, but I am now a functioning happy person again. Lyme disease is such a debilitating illness and most doctors don't even believe it exists. Dr. Marra has the expertise and knowledge to diagnose and know how to treat Lyme and all the co-infections. I feel fortunate to have found her!

As cliche as it may sound, Dr. Marra saved my life. I became massively ill with Lyme disease in 2010. Dr. Marra diagnosed my disease and treated me successfully. She is incredibly intelligent and got me on the other side of a debilitating disease. I have been out of treatment for 5 years now and my life is better than ever. I have a full time job and multiple hobbies. I went from being unable to walk one block to thriving, thanks to Dr. Marra. I am grateful for her and her unwavering commitment to Lyme patients every day.

I came to Dr. Marra VERY sick in November 2014. I had been living with Lyme for 4 years unknowingly. Each year I got sicker and sicker, I visited many doctors who tried to tell me I had everything under the sun, to nothing at all..it was all in my head. Anyway, I finally figured it out and got appropriate testing done, and found Marra. I am a year and 1 month into treatment and doing FANTASTIC! Every month I get better and better. I am fully confident that Marra will get me to optimal health. She is aggressive in her approach and uses high therapeutic dosages of antibiotics, which I am lucky enough to tolerate. She has a spunky attitude that I enjoy, a knack for knowing what meds to use, but most importantly she knows what she is doing! I am not going to be one of those Lyme patients who don't get better, I'm 85% there!

I don't normally write a review but when I do it's for Dr. Marra, Linda & Charlotte. By the time we found out about Dr. Marra, we had already been through every doc that we had heard of and it seemed no-one knew just how to help us. We called her office and Linda answered and she was a well of knowledge and I made an appointment and drove to Seattle that same week. The minute we walked into her office, we were greeted by her sweet dog Charlotte... who was just what our son needed! I was overwhelmed with her attentive care, her knowledge, her resources, her sympathy. She listened to us like no-one ever did. She knew exactly what tests to order, and that was the starting point that led to many changes! Her predictions were right on point! We left their energized and ready to implement her treatment plan. We are 6 months in and have already seen tremendous and unbelievable results.

My endocrinologist has ignored years of symptom complaints and wanted me to see a sleep disorder specialist. My family practice doctor would tell me it was stress. Dr Marra listened, asked questions and told me we would get to the bottom of my chronic pain, exhaustion, infections and frustration. Finally a doctor who spends more than 5 minutes with you and doesn't think Lyme or Fibromyalgia symptoms are just in your head.

Dr Marra is the only doctor to be able to diagnose me and treat the underlying problem. I am so grateful to have my energy and focus back. I can't recommend her enough! If you are being misdiagnosed by other doctors. I would highly recommend her!

In February 2019, my immune system went out of control causing what was a downward spiral of loss of use of legs and muscles, peripheral neuropathy and migrating muscle pain, and in general, all the nerves in my body going haywire. After 60 days on testing from my neurosurgeon; trips to rheumatology and various nerve conduction studies that show a progression of deadening nerves; 5 MIR’s; 2 Ultrasounds; and several x-rays; conventional medicine gave up. Luckily, I had a friend who had and continues to have chronic Lyme, she directed me IGeneX for a more comprehensive testing. Sure enough, I came back with exposure to Lyme and a co-infection Bartonella. Fortunately, my Lyme expert friend also knew of Dr. Marra, whom I went to see. Dr. Marra recognized my symptoms immediately without even looking at the IGeneX test results. She said I was a 7 out of 10, which was pretty bad. She started me on aggressive program of medications and within a few weeks the migrating pain and tingling all over my body was gone. It is now 8 months later and I’m still taking lots of meds, but my body has responded very well with strength and energy coming back to about 85%. It is a slower process that I would like but definitely have gotten better month by month. I can only say good things about Dr. Marra and more importantly is how much she knows about Lyme and its co-infectious diseases and how to treat them.
