Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9)
Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) is an enzyme that breaks down proteins in the extracellular matrix. It plays a role in tissue remodeling, wound healing, and immune system regulation. MMP-9 levels can become elevated due to chronic inflammation.
Some physicians order the MMP-9 blood test for patients with chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS) and mold illness to help evaluate inflammation levels in the body. CIRS is a condition characterized by chronic fatigue, pain, neurocognitive symptoms, and other problems potentially caused by exposure to biotoxins like mold.
Exposure to mold and biotoxins is thought to create a chronic inflammatory state in some people. Elevated MMP-9 may indicate ongoing inflammation and immune dysregulation in those with CIRS. The test may be used to monitor inflammation during treatment and recovery.
While MMP-9 is not a specific marker for CIRS or mold illness, some functional and integrative medicine practitioners believe it can be a helpful data point along with other lab tests and clinical evaluation
